20 ways to cope with nicotine cravings

Nicotine cravings can be powerful. Fight back with these simple—yet effective—craving busters.

Nicotine cravings can be powerful. But you’re not at the mercy of your cravings.

When
a nicotine craving strikes, remember that it’ll pass—often within less
than five minutes—whether you smoke a cigarette or not.

Each time you resist a nicotine craving, you’re one step closer to quitting smoking for good.

In the meantime, here are 20 craving busters to help you ride out the urge to smoke.

  1. Move.
Do deep knee bends, run in place or climb the stairs. A few minutes of
brisk activity may stop your nicotine craving in its tracks.
  2. Replace.
Try a stop-smoking product instead of a cigarette. Some types of
nicotine replacement therapy — including patches, gum and lozenges —
are available over-the-counter. Nicotine nasal spray and the nicotine
    inhaler are available by prescription.
  3. Face yourself in the mirror.
List out loud the reasons you want to quit smoking. Include the
benefits of staying tobacco-free, such as a longer and healthier life,
and more money — and time — to spend on things you enjoy.
  4. Breathe deeply. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. You might even inhale air through a drinking straw.
  5. Call for reinforcements. Team up with someone who doesn’t smoke for a quick chat or brisk walk.
  6. Make believe. Imagine your lungs getting healthier as each minute passes.
  7. Do the math.
Add up how much money you’ll save by not smoking for a week, a month or
a year. Make a list of luxuries you could buy with your savings — or
calculate the interest you’ll earn by investing the money.
  8. Read a quitter’s blog. Post encouraging thoughts for someone else who might be struggling with nicotine cravings.
  9. Drink up. Sip a glass of ice water slowly. When the water is gone, suck on the ice cubes.
  10. Sort your recipes.
Jot down the ingredients for a few good-for-you recipes you’ve been
meaning to try. The next time you shop for groceries, you’ll be a step
    ahead of the game.
  11. Laugh. Share a funny story with a friend, or search the Internet for a funny joke.
  12. Plan ahead. Make a list of all the ways you can reward yourself for making it through another nicotine craving.
  13. Freshen your breath. Brush and floss your teeth, rinse with mouthwash or suck on a breath mint.
  14. Clean your closet. Discard any clothes yellowed by cigarette smoke or damaged with cigarette burns.
  15. Try a mind bender. Do a crossword puzzle, word game or number puzzle.
  16. Get soapy. Wash your car, scrub the floor or give the dog a bath.
  17. Keep your mouth busy. Chew on a cinnamon stick, flavored toothpick or sugarless gum.
  18. Get musical. Whistle, sing or play a musical instrument. Ask a partner to dance.
  19. Have a ball. Dribble a basketball, hit a tennis ball against the wall or play catch with a partner.
  20. Be positive. Remind yourself that the power to quit smoking is in your hands.

Cold and Flu Myths

Cold and Flu Myths

By Rich Maloof for MSN Health & Fitness
Reality Check

Colds are not caused by going outside without a coat.

Sorry, Mom. You meant well, but the only way to catch a cold or flu
is by picking up a virus. Going out into the cold without a jacket or a
hat, or with wet hair, does nothing to facilitate transmission. It’s
true, though, that we are more prone in the winter. Viruses are more
easily shared when people are clustered together indoors.

Reality Check

Flu vaccines do not cause flu.

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention
are emphatic that you cannot get the flu from a flu shot. The vaccine
is made from killed or “inactivated” viruses, which can’t be
transmitted. However, you may experience a few side effects which mimic
the disease such as aches and a low-grade fever.

Reality Check

Feed a cold, starve a fever? Nah. Feed ’em both.

This
bit of armchair advice is probably repeated as often as it is jumbled.
But you wouldn’t want to starve either virus: At higher temperatures
the body produces more interferon, a protein that helps prevent virus
reproduction. “The body is like a furnace, and to create heat you need
calories,” says Dr. George Wootan, a family physician and author of
Take Care of Your Child’s Health. “When people have chills it is
because they don’t have enough calories to bring up the heat normally
…by feeding them, they will have enough calories to raise the
temperature, increase the interferon, and kill the bugs.” Wootan will
sometimes recommend to patients without a temperature that they promote
their own fever by getting into a hot tub or putting on warm clothes
and getting under the covers (drink lots of water, too, if you’re going
to try this method).

“[Some] might say that you should starve a
fever because you don’t want the fever to go higher,” he concludes,
“but the body isn’t dumb and won’t do damage that it can’t control.”

Reality Check

Viruses survive on surfaces.

You
don’t have to wait to be sneezed on to catch a cold or flu—you can pick
the virus up right from a counter top, keyboard, telephone or other
surface. Rhinoviruses, the family of germs responsible for most colds,
have been shown to survive on a surface (or “fomite,” in medical terms)
for several hours or even days. “The concentration of virus attenuates;
that is, the potency is less and less as time goes on. But you need
very few viral particles to trigger an infection,” explains Dr. Richard
Rosenfeld, professor and chairman of otolaryngology at Long Island
College Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. “Even if there’s just a little left
and you happen to touch that doorknob or coffee cup, the virus can then
survive on your hands for quite a long time. Then all it takes is a
little wipe or your nose or eyes and whatever little bit of virus on
there will go to town very quickly. It’s a very efficient multiplying
process.”

News: Mutant Respiratory Virus Has Claimed 10 Lives, says CDC

Reality Check

Colds that linger or worsen may indicate sinusitis.

Barring
an underlying condition or immune deficiency, most people can fight off
a cold inside of 10 days. When symptoms such as congestion, headache
and runny nose drag on, it may indicate a bacterial infection of the
sinuses, or sinusitis.
“Duration of a cold beyond 10 days is highly suggestive of bacterial
infection,” says Rosenfeld, who was the lead author of a new guideline
for treating adult sinusitis,
which addresses the importance of distinguishing a cold from sinusitis.
“The other feature suggesting sinusitis is the pattern of ‘double
worsening.’ That’s when someone starts to feel better and then all of a
sudden they get hit again, and they’re getting worse. Now bacterial
infection has superimposed itself on the viral illness. When you have
prolonged illness or the double-worsening pattern, it’s reasonable to
consider antibiotics.”

Reality Check

Vitamin C is ineffective for preventing or treating cold or flu.

A review of 30 studies
on vitamin C that was updated in May 2007 put to rest a few dozen
years’ of overconfidence in orange juice. “Vitamin C cannot effectively
prevent or cure common colds or flu in the majority of people,” says
Sari Greaves, registered dietician with New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
Greaves allows that some benefit has been shown for extreme athletes
exercising in extreme cold, but “since vitamin C is only known to offer
a biological benefit in certain cases and in a restricted number of
people, for the average adult, it’s not worth it to supplement.”

Reality Check

It’s true: we can put a man on the moon but we can’t cure the common cold.

The
problem is that there are hundreds of varieties, or serotypes, of
rhinovirus in addition to other viruses that cause the common cold. Of
those hundreds, just a few are causing widespread infection at any
point in time. The serotypes change so rapidly that they’re impossible
to keep up with. A vaccine would have to be specific to the current
serotype, and by the time the virus was identified and an antidote
developed, the active serotype would have changed. On the plus side,
we’ve been to the moon six times.

Personalise Boot Screen (Vista 32-bit)

November 28th, 2007 by randomstuffblog

Source: Development Dan’s Blog

(32-bit only for now)(For Vista Users Only)(Requires knowledge of taking ownership of files and folders)
There
is finally an easy way (easier than before) to change your Windows
Vista boot screen and use any high resolution photo as your boot
screen.Instructions can be found during installation

Download: Vista Boot Logo Generator

Instructions:
By default, Vista’s high resolution boot logo is NOT ENABLED.  To enable the hi-res boot logo, you must enable the /NOGUIBOOT option using MSCONFIG (Start > msconfig.exe).

High-res Vista boot logos come in two different sizes: 800×600 and 1024×768.  Both sizes are full 24-bit colour.  To generate a valid boot logo file, you must supply BOTH sizes.

This program currently only generates the boot logo file (winload.exe.mui).  It’s up to you to copy it to the correct location for it to be loaded.  In most cases, the correct folder is:

    %windir%\System32\en-US

Under Visa’s tighter security settings, you will probably not have write permissions for the above file.  So before you can overwrite it, you will have to take ownership of the file, then give yourself write permissions.  If you need to do this, type the following two commands at a Command Prompt:

    takeown /f C:\Windows\System32\en-US\winload.exe.mui

    cacls C:\Windows\System32\en-US\winload.exe.mui /G YourUserName:F

Obviously, in the second command, replace YourUserName with your own Windows user name.

If User Account Control gives you hassle, it’s probably easiest to disable it (at least temporarily).

One final bit of advice - make sure you back up your original winload.exe.mui (boot logo) file before you go overwriting, just in case you want to return to the original!

Disable Unnecessary Vista Services (Helps Improve Performance)

November 28th, 2007 by randomstuffblog

Taken from: Vista Rewired

You have probably
seen numerous service disabling guides around already. However, we have
organized this tutorial differently. We have sorted them into
categories so you can easily disable the ones that have little or no
noticeable affect on the way Vista operates, but at the same time,
improving performance.

I have only listed services for you to disable that have been
activated by Windows by default. While you might have spent more time
looking through the services to find which ones were actually activated
on your PC, the ones listed here are actually enabled services on your
PC if you haven’t already disabled them.

With over 134 services running in Windows Vista, it wouldn’t hurt to disable the ones you don’t need.

Table of Contents:

Why this guide:
Unlike many other tutorials, we have only included
services that are enabled by default on your computer, leaving out the
unnecessary ones. The services are also sorted from lite-heavy
depending on how much of an impact they will have on the system.

Intro:

As you may already know, Windows Vista is a very demanding OS with over 134 services
running on the Ultimate Version. These services can really take up a
lot of your resources and bog down your PC, especially if you are using
Vista under minimum requirements. Regardless of which version of Vista you have, we have outlined the many services that can be safely disabled by you to greatly improve performance. How this was done was at first, I looked at my list of Services in Vista Ultimate
to see which ones were activated, and listed the ones that were safe to
disable below. This means that if you never activated any service on
your own, you would have disabled most or all of the services that you
don’t require. If you have a lower version of Vista, some of the
services might not apply for you but be rest assured, that you would
have disabled most of the services you don’t require. Just to recap,
the services we will be disabling: - are the ones that you most likely don’t need - can be safely disabled  The services are sorted into three levels:

——————————————————————————————-

BEFORE DISABLING ANY SERVICES:

Please be sure you are aware of what you are doing. Vista Rewired
has tested each and every one of the services here with the exception
of the ones in parenthesis. We are not responsible for what happens to
your computer after tweaking with these services.
However, we have tested each service to make sure no damage will be done. To ensure complete safety for your PC please make sure:

a) You read each description so you are fully aware of what you are doing
b) You might want to add a System Restore Point so you can easily revert mistakes
c) The guide is still constantly being updated and is not yet
finalized. If you know of any services we may have missed, please let
us know using the comments form below.

——————————————————————————————-

How to disable a service:

  1. Click on the Start Pearl
  2. Type services.msc in the search box
  3. You might be prompted by a UAC box. Click continue, or learn how to disable it here.
  4. Right click a service, and choose Stop to stop it immediately
  5. For some services you are unable to stop it until after reboot. Simply right click and
    choose properties.properties.jpg
  6. Then select disable from the drop-down menu.disable.jpg

——————————————————————————————-

Legend:

  • Lite services being the safest to disable.
Many of these services are useless and have a barely noticeable affect
on the way Vista runs. There are a few exceptions that depend on your
    PC habits.
  • Medium services have a moderate impact on performance. These might or might not be disabled depending on your PC habits.
  • Heavy services have the greatest impact on the way your system works. Make sure you know what you’re doing before turning these off.

——————————————————————————————-

The guide is still constantly being updated and is not yet
finalized. If you know of any services we may have missed, please let
us know using the comments form below.

  2. Medium Services
  3. Heavy Services:

As well, you can do some experimenting of your own.

Why disable?

Less RAM usage

Disable this if you are not connected to a LAN with other computers or if you don’t plan on sharing your file or printer.

Why disable?

Program Compatibility Assistant

Description:

Allows compatibility with software from previous operating systems

Effects of Disabling:

By
disabling this doesn’t necessarily mean that you cannot run
applications designed for XP like I am doing now. It just means that

Optical Illusions

Optical Illusions taken from: Mighty Optical Illusions

The below optical illusion was
created by John Pugh, he is an artist that does excellent trompe l’oeil
(French for trick the eye) murals. Magazines
wrote: "John Pugh’s trompe l’oeil murals are so lifelike they cause
mishaps and confusion for the unsuspecting. In 1981, after the
completion of his first major project, the mural on Taylor Hall on the
CSU, Chico campus, several fender benders occurred because motorists
were distracted by what looks like a gaping hole in the building."

This really a nice one. Circular snakes appear to rotate ’spontaneously’, while infact this is really a statical image.

Here
is an "impossible" version pictured with a high degree of realism. The
two points where the linear edges must overlap have been purposely
confused. The resulting figure produces an even more jarring
figure-ground dilemma, likely to be interpretted as humorous or
upsetting.

Plugins for Windows Live Messenger AND MSN Messenger

November 17th, 2007 by randomstuffblog
Applications / Frameworkx AutoReply Add-In 1.2

July, 26th 2006: We have released Windows Live Messenger:
AutoReply Add-In 1.2

On Version 1.2 we added the single most
requested feature for this
plug in. The ability to limit the autoreply
to a single messgage per user.

Now on the management window (settings) you can
select either if
you would like to reply multiple times or with
just one single message
to the person who’s trying to reach you.

How it works? It’s very simple if I send you a
message and you’re away
I will get only one autoreply from you, saying
whatever you want it to
say. I will only receive a new autoreply from
you when you change
your status (from away to busy for instance).

This
application fulfills a very simple concept. When I’m logged in to

Messenger but my status is other than Online, you can enable this
add-in
to auto-reply to messages sent you with very simple verbiage,
like:
“I’m currently away from my computer but I will get back to you
as soon
as possible”.

I found this to be a great way to be courteous with the people, and
also a time saver since you can customize the messages to say
whatever
you want.

Ex. When I’m Set to be right back, I can auto-reply saying: “I’ll be
right back but if this is an emergency you can call me on my mobile
phone (555) 123- 4567.”

This version will allow you to customize auto-reply messages for
the following status:

  • - Away
  • - Busy
  • - Be Right Back
  • - In a Call
  • - Out To lunch

AutoReply for Messenger includes an MSI that will
automaticallyinstall the required components to run the add-In and a

post-installation document that will guide you on how to activate the

add-in within your Windows Live Messenger.

3 Useful Tools Clean/Recover/Defragmentation

November 5th, 2007 by randomstuffblog
3 free and simple tools for you to clean, recover lost files and defrag your system.

Welcome to CCleaner

Link: CCleaner
CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool.
It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster
and freeing up valuable hard disk space.
It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history.
But the best part is that it’s fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains
NO Spyware or Adware! :)

Welcome to Recuva

Link: Recuva

Recuva (pronounced "recover") is a freeware Windows utility to
restore files that have been accidentally deleted from your computer.
This includes files emptied from the Recycle bin as well as images and
other files that have been deleted by user error from digital camera
memory cards or MP3 players. It will even bring back files that have
been deleted by bugs, crashes and viruses!
